newt is a hyperlocal "what's on near me" app for Newtown, Sydney. It shows happy hours, food specials and local events, and — with your permission — passively notices when you visit a local venue so you can keep a private history of your nights out. This policy explains what we collect, why, and your choices. We've tried to keep it plain.
newt is operated by Ganush Corp ("we", "us"). Contact: contact@newt.beer.
| Data | Why | How |
|---|---|---|
| Location (precise & background) | To detect when you arrive at and leave a participating venue (the core feature) and to measure how many people who saw an offer actually visited. | Via your device's power-efficient geofencing. The app reacts to "entered"/"exited" events for a small list of venues and sends us only which venue, whether you entered or left, and when — never your coordinates. When you pull to refresh, the app reads your position once to show walking times; that reading stays on your device. |
| Anonymous device ID | To associate your visits, saved events and plans with your device without identifying you. | A random UUID created on first launch and stored on your device. |
| Account details (only if you sign in) | To let you sign in and keep your history across devices. Signing in moves your anonymous history onto your account. | Your name, email address and profile picture as shared by Google or Apple, plus the sign-in session (including the IP address and device/browser details it was created from). Apple may give us a private relay address instead of your real email. |
| App activity (screens viewed, offers seen and saved, visits, plans, plan votes) | To run the features you use and to understand which features are useful. | Stored in our backend (Convex) against your anonymous ID or account. |
| Crowd checks ("How's the vibe?" answers) | To show everyone how busy a venue is right now. | Your answer is stored against your anonymous ID or account. Other people only ever see a combined, anonymous crowd level for the venue. |
| Notification details | To deliver the notifications you've turned on, at sensible local times. | Your device's push token, which notification types you've enabled, and your time zone offset. |
| Feedback & bug reports (only if you send them) | To read your ideas and fix the problems you report. | What you write, an optional screenshot, your app version, device model, OS version and the screen you were on, and identifiers linking the report to the matching diagnostic session. |
| Analytics & diagnostics | To fix crashes and improve reliability of background detection. | Product analytics, masked session replays and crash reports via PostHog (EU). Replays mask text/inputs. |
If you grant "While using the app" only, or deny location, newt still works for browsing what's on — only the passive visit detection is disabled.
We use a small number of service providers ("processors") to run the app. They process data on our behalf and are not permitted to use it for their own purposes:
Some of these providers store or process data outside Australia (for example in the United States or the EU). We do not sell or rent personal data, and we do not share it with advertisers or data brokers.
Visit, saved-event, plan and account records are kept while you use the app so we can show your history. Analytics and diagnostic data are retained for up to 12 months.
If you signed in, you can delete your account at any time — in the app under Settings → Account → Delete account, or on our account deletion page. Your sign-in ends immediately, and your account details and everything stored against it (visits, saved events, plans and votes, crowd checks, stamps, notification details, feedback and bug reports) are erased within minutes. We don't keep anonymised copies of your visits. Analytics events in PostHog are tied to a random analytics ID rather than your account; the app resets that ID when you delete your account, and the old events expire within 12 months (email us if you want them erased sooner).
Without an account, newt only knows your anonymous device ID: email us (see below) to delete the data tied to it. Uninstalling the app removes the locally-stored ID and on-device data.
As an Australian app we handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles. Where applicable (e.g. data processed in the EU by PostHog), we also support access/erasure requests under the GDPR.
newt features venues that serve alcohol and is intended for people 18 and over. It is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone under 18.
If we make material changes we'll update this page and the "last updated" date above.
